Choosing Homes, Choosing Schools

A series of policy shifts over the past decade promises to change how Americans decide where to send their children to school. In theory, the boom in standardized test scores and charter schools will allow parents to evaluate their assigned neighborhood school, or move in search of a better option. But what kind of data do parents actually use while choosing schools? Are there differences among suburban and urban families? How do parents’ choices influence school and residential segregation in America? Choosing Homes, Choosing Schools presents a breakthrough analysis of the new era of school choice, and what it portends for American neighborhoods. The distinguished contributors to Choosing Homes, Choosing Schools investigate the complex relationship between education, neighborhood social networks, and larger patterns of inequality. Paul Jargowsky reviews recent trends in segregation by race and class. His analysis shows that segregation between blacks and whites has declined since 19

No Dream Deferred: Why Black and Latino Families Are Choosing Homeschool

Education is essential to success, but the school systems in America are constantly and inexcusably failing black and Latino children. In their desperate search for a solution, many families are realizing that homeschooling may be their best option.

No Dream Deferred delves into the history of black and Latino education in America—from slavery through the civil rights movement to the return of de facto segregation that students are experiencing today. The book’s specific, justified criticism of the American education system is unflagging. In public schools, private schools, and even relatively new charter schools, black and Latino students are not receiving the education they need—the education that is their only chance for success when the deck is already stacked against them. Can homeschooling turn this tide?

In the past, homeschooling was championed for ideological reasons, often used by conservative white families in response to the lack of religion allo

Children's Books: GERALD MCGILLIGOG'S DOG (Funny, Whimsical, Rhyming Bedtime Story/Picture Book, for Beginner Readers About Choosing to be Happy, Ages 2-8) (Happy Children's Series Book 9)

When the desires of a dog and a frog coincide, they decide to trade places. Fortunately for them, the dog’s owner, Gerald McGilligog, never wears his glasses. The family of McGilligogs is also remiss about wearing their glasses, which in turn affects their eyesight and ability to distinguish between the frog and dog. Thus the frog, posing as a dog, finds a new home. All the characters, including the green one, find happiness in this new arrangement.

The whimsical art of Sally Huss bounces along with rhyming, tongue-twisting words as the story unfolds.

Children who love the rhyming, nonsensical books of Dr. Seuss will love this book. And those who are fans of the books by Mo Willems, the Berenstains, Sandra Boynton, Felicia Bond, Laura Numeroff, and P.D. Eastman will also love GERALD MCGILLIGOG’S DOG. Age range: 2-8.

Excerpt:

“Once among the family of McGilligogs, a-gogs, with moms and dads and lads and lasses,

None of them wearing glasses,

The frog was given a juicy bone.

He smiled and said, ‘I’ve found my home.

This is the life for me.

I’m no longer in a bog a bog

Sitting on a log, a log.’

He decided he’d be a dog, a dog

And was as happy as could be.”
